April 29th 2016 New planting in the vegetable garden

My tomato plants were very tall and leggy; I decided the only solution was to plant them in the ground despite a couple of nights of low temperatures and high winds had been forecast.

Well hopefully the last of the predicted cold nights is over!  It has been a week of little sun, many showers and lots of strong winds.

April 26th 2016 More Iris selections

Sunday wasn’t as windy as had been forecast but there was a lot of rain; welcome rain as it had rained much in the last few weeks even though it had been promised (threatened) for many days!  The skies cleared late in the afternoon and allowed our lunch guests to view the garden albeit wearing padded jackets!

I’ve never seen my Bearded Irises as tall; ideal for the cyclone we are promised!  I do hope the 50 and 60 km per hour winds that has been mentioned doesn’t materialize.

Welcome to Garden Bloggers’ Foliage Day for April; I hope you will join me in exploring the virtues of good foliage planting in the garden this month.

I have been wondering what foliage I would feature in today’s post; looking through my images there wasn’t one that didn’t have some colour from flowers and although I have often written about the key part foliage plays in supporting the flowering plants that isn’t what I want to focus on today.

April 21st 2016 more poppies!

One of the greatest pleasures at this time of year is to see so much of the countryside here covered in poppies.  Sometimes there are so many it looks, from a distance as if a red sheet has been spread across the ground.  But close up I like to see them mixed with the other wild flowers I associate with fields left fallow and meadows of the past.

April 19th 2016 It seems like another season

I mentioned in my post for In a vase on Monday yesterday that the light was excellent for photographs yesterday morning.  Here’s a quick walk around to see the new flowers.

April 18th 2016 In a Vase on Monday

There was no post yesterday because the wind was blowing very hard all day, at least 23 km per hour with gusts that were much more.  It wasn’t pleasant to be outside and impossible to take any photographs that weren’t just a blur.  Today is overcast but completely still, ideal for photography.  But today is Monday, the day for a vase of flowers but from the garden.
